Forum Guest: Judge Marilyn Milian

Judge Marilyn Milian, the first Latina Judge to host a nationally syndicated television court show, presides over the courtroom that launched the entire court show genre. Milian brings to the bench extensive experience including ten years as a prosecutor, under former Attorney General Janet Reno, and seven years as a judge presiding over everything from small claims cases to death penalty litigation.

People's Court is a one-hour nationally syndicated reality based court show featuring real litigants, real cases and real justice. People's Court draws on ordinary people who have filed grievances in civil court and have opted to have their cases heard and mediated by Judge Milian.

In behavioral research, we try to identify and control sources of rater bias in determining the reliability and validity of an assessment. Scott Turow's discussion of judges' "backstories" is a step in that direction. In the case of TV courtrooms, one might ask, what additional distortions of judgment are contributed by the venue? Among these we should consider special conditions, such as the fact that all judgments are paid by court tv producers; special constraints, such as the time allocated to the segment and the desire to make the segment entertaining; special influences, such as awareness of cameras; and special outcomes, such as the effect of broad public exposure on participants. How do these influence justice, both in the judgment and the impact on litigants? We might then determine, on balance, the degree to which the experience has a positive or negative effect on public education.

To put it mildly, she is ABUSIVE. She shreds people verbally who have done nothing to deserve it.

The first few time I watched her show, I liked it. However, I got tired of her disrepectful and abusive behavior toward litagants who had done nothing wrong.

I've loved her show from day one and the tougher she got the more I liked to show. I rarely get to see the show now that I am working full time. Way to go, WooHoo to the hottest judge on TV

Since I work full-time during the day, I don't watch much daytime television (obviously) but I think Judge Milian is trying to imitate Judge Judy and is not very good at it. I don't think much of her as a judge anyway, however.

The black robe and other trappings of judgeship don't impress me or change my opinion of her. In my opinion, she acks like a hooker.

At least she seem honest and doesn't put on airs the way Judge Alex Ferrer seems to do on his show.

I am one of those who will let a real judge decide a case for me in a real courtroom. At least in a real courtroom, there seems to be a code of conduct for judges as well as litigants and observers.

The TV judges seems to be able to act the way they want and treat litigants the way they want, while piously demanding respect from their "bench".

I still remember Judge Wapner. I'm not sure of the correct spelling, but I know he was (and still is) a person of high intregrity with a lot of class.

I cannot say that about Judge Marilyn Megamouth.
